  5. Not a big fan of Tesla's myself, but there's a bunch of new EVs popping up including the Rivian which have the potential to convert me. Do you own an EV? How do you find mileage? What's the charging dealio? Convince me why I should purchase an EV over a gas guzzling turbo diesel for my next vehicle.

  11. Got a split in my intercooler piping somewhere, so it's gotta get upgraded right? Anyone got recommendations for intercooler kits? Can fit myself.

  15. It's soooo fucking good to see Hamilton off his perch for a change. F1 really got boring in the post Redbull era. I think Dan had to move to be honest, being second to Max would have been hell, same as the Mark Webber and Sebastien Vettel days. I have more respect for him helping a struggling team to return to some amount of glory; he did really well considering the rubbish car Renault put up for him. His days at McLaren so far have been disappointing but the weekends race really showed he still has a chance to be up there. That said.... How fucking awesome is Lando Norris?

  20. SOLD 2015 Had the car since October 2006, when it was dead stock except the 18" chromies. Since then it has basically had lots of small little mods since. At the moment it's off the road getting some new goodies, still yet to decide where I want to take it, and it's going to be off the road for a good 6 months while I make up my mind and get everything done. In chronological order of modifications: Mods Installed Gizzmo Electronics MS-IBC boost controller Greddy front mount intercooler + piping Reinhard 3" cat back exhaust Reinhard 3" front pipe K&N 4" pod filter 3" high flow metal cat converter Whiteline strut brace Whiteline front/rear "Blade" adjustable swaybars Whiteline castor bushes Bosch 023 fuel pump Innovate Motorsports wideband O2 sensor Nismo 740cc injectors Magnafuel fuel pressure regulator MSD DIS-4 Plus ignition unit AEM Pencil Coils Haltech PS1000 ECU Z32 gearbox conversion OS Giken twin plate clutch One piece tailshaft Alloy radiator + twin AU thermo fans 6 boost manifold + GT3076R turbo Turbosmart Hypergate 45mm wastegate QFM A1RM brake pads, front and back DBA 4000 slotted rotors Lightweight alloy pulleys (power steering, air con, etc) Earls oil cooler with oil filter relocation + thermostat Custom pipework (AusPerformance free advertising booyah!!! ) Radiator mounted catch can Speedflow braided lines throughout (oil catch can, fuel rail-fuel reg, turbo lines) Stripped rear seats and boot To do: Tyres Replace resonator in exhaust with a new Magnaflow muffler or straight through pipe Long Term Plans: Coilovers - HSD HT series Nismo 1.5/2 way LSD lightweight wheels + semislicks brake ducting R33 GTR brake swap (calipers + slotted rotors) Surge tank + fuel pump + speedflow lines/fittings Subframe lock kit, camber arms, plus other suspension mods 6 point CAMS approved roll cage with side intrusion bars and harnesses Weight reduction - remove back seat [done], carpet, dash, etc etc. Forged bottom end (rods, pistons, etc), headwork / bottom end work Tomei adjustable cam gears (maybe at the moment, tossing up whether to keep VCT or not) Tomei 260IN/260EX Procam camshafts Valve springs + oversized valves And to top all that off, I'm tuning it myself I'm not sure what the ultimate goal is with the car. I did have it for sale, but due to the number of tyre kickers around, I got over that, and want to spec it out for circuit, drift and hill climb events.
  21. Take one VP Commodore. Add a turbocharger and a sprinkling of boost. The end result is one very agitated reaction. Often some of the best project cars happen by mistake. What might have originally been just a freshened-up motor or a quick respray can become a crazy engine conversion or full strip-down concourse car. In the case of Matt Crust’s VPII S-Pack Commodore, you see before you one very different Holden. “The whole build was just supposed to be a manual conversion; rebuild a motor with a cam, and make it a decent cruiser. Then one day I was browsing eBay and saw a turbo kit (mind you this was halfway through the engine getting built) at a price I couldn’t say no to. So I got it.” And that was it. What was supposed to be merely a cammed V6 with a stick-shift is now a turbocharged, tyre-frying demon that does little to give away its ruthless potential. With a Garrett GT3582R snail taking pride of place in the engine bay and Haltech engine management, Matt’s VP is good for 278kw on 1bar of boost (or 374RWHP on 14.5psi in the old money). A full engine rebuild on a low-mileage motor was always in the works with the conversion to manual, and Matt sensibly went and sourced an ACL Race-series rebuild kit, along with Crow valve and timing gear. The BorgWarner T5 also received some attention, being rebuilt with new bearings, synchros and cryogenically-treated gears. Out the back is a Holden LSD and 3.08:1 gears. With the 3800 Buick motor rebuilt and ready to unleash hell, Matt and two of his mates went about putting the engine back in the bay and fitting up the turbo kit and other ancillaries. Comprehensive modifications were made to the fuel system, with 60lbs Siemens injectors, a Turbosmart FPR800 fuel pressure regulator, and Walbro 550hp intank fuel pump. Under-bonnet modifications extend to dual 38mm Turbosmart wastegates, a Turbosmart dual-port BOV, and 600x300mm front-mount air-to-air intercooler. Exhaust gasses are dispelled via a custom 3” exhaust, with a Lukey muffler keeping noise levels civil. For an 18yo car it still looks terrific. The fact it doesn’t have mismatched panels like most cars of this vintage helps, but to most people it looks just like a regular VP. To distance it a little from the crowd Matt put on a Group A bonnet bulge, Senator bootlip spoiler and Calais spats, subtle mods this writer thinks do far more for the car than a wild bodykit ever would. Matt certainly thinks so. “I’m happy with the result. I think it’s a hard job to do a VN or VP and not make it look bogan, but I think I may have pulled it off.” For this writer, the intercooler poking out from underneath the front bar says the most about the car, hinting to you what it’s capable of, but not flaunting it like many (often slower) imports you’d normally think of when you’re discussing turbo conversions. The 20×8.5” Starcorp wheels do a good job of trying to dwarf the new slotted brakes; 330mm rotors on the front and 315mm on the rear. Joining the party are PBR calipers (twin-piston front, single-piston rear), and they certainly match the engine’s performance when the time comes to slow the whole shebang down. Ride height is achieved by way of ultra-low King Springs, and handling improved with nolathane bushes and an adjustable panhard rod. Impressively the car is still fairly driveable (it doesn’t seem to be hamstrung by being a live-axle rear at all), and despite the relatively skinny rubber (Maxxis 225 30R20s front and rear) it still hustles. First gear is useless, but the VP hooks up pretty well in second. By the time we’re getting traction and snatching third, the car is hitting boost very hard and going well beyond the legal speed limit, as the wind noise accompanying the whistling turbo gets louder and louder. It goes a lot harder than your average Commodore, and there’s something devilish about hearing forced-induction noises over the normal Commodore V6 drone. The interior is largely untouched, but to help keep Matt and his passengers strapped in under full throttle there are two SAAS racing buckets (along with the SAAS steering wheel, won at CB07 and acting as a big motivator in carrying out the modifications seen above). But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Those who have modified cars will appreciate the frustration of having a finished project, and to have problem after painful problem come from nowhere. “In October 2009 I blew the head gaskets, and that’s where it started. What followed was six months of fault-finding; lifters, valve springs, a reconditioned head.” And that was it? “No. Two weeks after the head went back on I put a pushrod through the roller rocker.” So it was hardly smooth sailing, and it didn’t stop there. It pains Matt to say the gearbox in the car now is not the rebuilt beauty written above, but a standard unit just to get the car on the road again. And while it does the job, “it rattles like a Milo tin full of coins.” You win some and you lose some. But if there’s one thing this writer is certain of, no joy comes from selling something as emotive as the car you’ve worked on with your own hands. Matt considered selling the Commodore, but making that even harder is the fact this is his very first car. “I know most people look at it and wonder why I sank so much money into a VP, and I have wondered at times too. But, I think some of it has to do with it being my first car, and it’s a special attachment most of us have to our first cars, no matter how bad it may have been. At times I wish I did it differently; I have gone through stages wishing I could’ve dropped in an LS1 or a 2J, but at the end of the day, what I have done is what makes it different.” And there you have it. Some eight years after initially buying it, the end result is a bit different from what Matt dreamt of. But really, at the end of the day having any car like this can be summed up answering just one question; does it still put a smile on your face when you drive it? “If it didnt, I wouldn’t have kept spending money on it!” Story – Alex Burchell Photos - Joanna Georgiou Build-up Thread - http://www.cruisingbrisbane.com/forum/topic/46394-vp-turbo/
  22. There’s nothing funny about the way Sheena Saunders’ 180SX Type X goes about getting down the drag strip… In a somewhat unconventional method of researching cars, our feature car’s owner Sheena Saunders had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted; “ When I was younger, I was amused by this car that had flippy headlights, so I knew one day I had to own one.” Luckily for her it was the Nissan 180SX that had caught her attention, and not a hairdresser’s car like a Celica. What you see here is the end product of some 4 years and hundreds of hours of love and labour; a 1996 Nissan 180SX Type X, with its fully rebuilt blacktop SR20 punching out a strong 327RWHP (or 244kw for you younger kids playing at home). Built to be a fun street car with enough bite to be used on the drag strip, Sheena came up against many challenges on the way; engine failures, broken gearboxes and diffs, dodgy workshops. If you can think of unlucky events, chances are Sheena’s had it happen to her 180SX and then some. If anything, it highlights how committed Sheena has been to building this 180SX to the standard she wants. Just looking at it is impressive. Ford kindly provided the beautiful Velocity paintwork, and with the added platinum and purple pearl, it really serves to highlight the aggressive lines of this seriously aggressive car. Adding to the aggression is a set of Koya Inox R1s, in 19×8.5” +32 and 19×9.5” +32 sizes. To make sure the rims fill the guards, Sheena had the car lowered using King Springs and Koni Adjustable shocks to tighten up the handling. Slowing down the party is thanks to the DBA slotted rotors all round (hubs and 4-pot calipers courtesy of an R32 GTR). Attached to the SR20 is one of Nissan’s finest gearboxes, the vaunted Z32 300ZX 5sp manual with an NPC button clutch and 10″ billet flywheel arrangement, spinning a custom two-piece tailshaft that’s connected to an R33 Skyline viscous LSD. But what about the engine, you say? Indeed, that fine engine. Extensive work has gone into the 180′s SR20. A bored, honed and acid-bathed block was the blank canvas for the reground crank, Eagle rods, forged CP pistons, and ACL race-series bearings. Sheena didn’t muck around with the head either, getting it ported and polished, installing new valves and upgraded valve springs and retainers, and Tomei rocker stoppers. ARP main and head bolts keep it all together. To help generate nice top-end power, a set of 270/270 Tomei Pro camshafts were installed, along with adjustable Tomei cam gears. Such nice touches as a Nismo oil pump, a larger Trust sump, and a PWR radiator help with reliability. Speedflow fittings and braided lines are used throughout and overall the engine bay is a very nice place to be. In keeping with the tough streeter philosophy, Sheena had the responsive Garrett GT2871R snail bolted to the tuned-length stainless steel exhaust manifold. A PWR intercooler keeps intake temperatures low, while a full 3” stainless steel exhaust from the dump pipe back dispels exhaust gases easily. With the help of the Apexi PowerFC, 327RWHP on a comfortable 18psi is the result. And boy, does it hustle. With all this talk of 600+HP TT V8s and 2Js these days, it’d be easy to disregard this 180SX as a pretender. But driven with intent, it’ll get down and move. Lag is minimal, and the top end doesn’t feel that peaky at all; it’s all nice and chubby in its power delivery and very driveable. It really is a well executed build and there’s no wonder this car could be driven every day. But a 12.41@112MPH quarter mile time dispenses any concerns this is merely a street car. And that time was when the car was making just 290HP, so there’s definitely more in it. And that’s Sheena’s game; “Soon, I’ll be going to a Garrett GT3076R. I’m hoping to make 450RWHP, and run low 11’s.” I guess a kid’s got to keep dreaming big. Like any big build, a lot of people often deserve credit, and this is no exception. Duane, Sheena’s partner, and their friend Col have spent many nights and countless hours working on the 180 and their effort and support is much appreciated. Shane Blank’s wealth of knowledge was also heavily utilised when the engine build went ahead (because he knows a thing or two about building tough Srs). So, far from being funny, this car is seriously quick, and it certainly deserves respect. Alex Burchell
